Since there are still questions regarding what’s in store for The O’Quinn Law Firm, I thought it might be appropriate to inquire within.
Senior Attorney Neil McCabe was kind enough to answer my questions. He sees exciting things happening for the firm which recently signed a new five year lease in their current office space. The biggest change for the firm is that it is no longer a company owned by an individual or even stock holders.
Mr. McCabe explained it like this…
The law firm is an asset of the estate, which means that he and the other lawyers and staff in the firm essentially work for a charity, not John O’Quinn, wealthy trial lawyer anymore. The estate is liquidating some assets, such as cars, real estate, etc… but not the law firm, which will continue to generate income for the estate, i.e. for the foundation.
Mr. O’Quinn died without any heirs. He was not married and never had any children.
McCabe said, “The liquidation of part of the car collection, as well as the fact that the will was published in the newspaper and called for the “orderly” winding up and dissolution of the firm, may have created a false impression that the firm now is closing. Even if the plan were to shut down the firm, an “orderly” process can take years, given the major litigation and the many hundreds of clients that the firm now has. The firm has signed a new 5-year lease on the office space. The firm actually is taking new cases. I acquired a new one yesterday, and there are several others in the pipeline.”
Mr. McCabe also said that things just arent the same without John around and he is missed very much. He added, “The executor of the estate, Gerry Treece, told me yesterday that, contrary to the rumors going around, the firm is not shutting down. There has been some streamlining of the firm, and a new business model is being developed.”
And that means prior recipients of O’Quinn’s good will such as health, mental health, children’s charities, law schools and science museum charities will continue to benefit from his legacy.
According to the Houston Chronicle, in recent years, a couple of Mr. O’Quinn’s larger gifts were, $1.1 million to South Texas College of Law and $5 million to a psychiatric hospital, The Menninger Clinic, where O’Quinn was on a committee. See photo above…

That’s great, it looks like the gracious, considerate John O’Quinn legacy will flourish for years to come.
John’s charities must have a sense of confidence with the decision to keep the firm.
I hope the board is reasonable and comes with experience in the matter of running a law firm and don’t make it difficult. The board will either make or break it for them.
I wish them many years of success.
Thank you QV and thank you, Neil McCabe. It’s nice to hear this sort of affirmation from a reliable source (that includes you too, QV! LOL). I would love to know more about the long term goals and commitments, although I’m sad to hear that John’s car collection (if those are the cars Neil is talking about) is being sold off.
I still have those odd moments when it’s hard to believe John is really gone. Isn’t that funny? I never met the man, but I felt like I knew him. :sidefrown:
John’s charities were probably, more than likely a great ‘write off.’
He wasn’t no cowpoke…
Never drove a stern.
Get my drift…just what little sanity I have left in believing this fairy tale…
Although, once I’m done I twood like to be thrown over-board and be food for some bottom feeding sharks…
They are rather good at eating garbage, and cleaning tanks.
Reminds me of ‘Art(s) and Crafts.’
The more I think about the way John left things is he wanted his money to work for good. He took steps ot ensure it. What a wonderful man and what a wonderful way to leave this world.
I pick this song from Pink today in remembrance of the beautiful Anna Nicole
“If someone said three years from now
You’d be long gone…When someone said count your blessings now ‘fore they’re long gone”

You’ve gotta’ respect a man that never got married and had no babies…or none known?
What a guy.
Sounds like he was pretty careful except for speeding.
Maybe Leno will buy up that ’stable?’
Hi Mary,
Now I’m gonna’ listen to ‘that link.’
“We’re sorry, that page cannot be found”
Not for profit!

“And I won’t forget you my friend
What happened”
Freida, I put a link that works
That’s weird Freida, it worked on topix, maybe I didn’t link it here right. They are both good videos

Some things are better heard live, especially country-western music.
There’s (many forms) a great generation gap between me and “Pink.”
Probably would like all ‘her lyrics,’ though.
I still like ‘classical’ best.
I’ve heard ‘it’s’ brain food.
lol
That was especially ‘dramatic’ in court, on tv, when he passed out.
Then everyone was relieved, and laughed, and relaxed.
He stole ‘that show’ and almost made it real…for just one brief moment…everyone seemed suddenly to care.
Um, Freida, John O’Quinn was married twice, and from everything I read was very involved with Darla Lexington…lol…honey, I gotta tell you, men will always hang with a gal, unless he has other inclinations. I don’t know for sure, but I think Darla may have been a very good influence on him.
Wow! That song is a great tribute to ANS. Pink was awesome at the Grammy’s. Brave girl!
Oh, then he was divorced twice?
lol
Or…possibly a widower.
What do I know anyway?
Divorced twice but smart enough not to do it a third time.
Yeah, I know. I didn’t remember, so I looked that up.
Wonder if his last wife was “A Designated Driver?”
Just thinkin’ ’bout what Carol wrote here, and interested wording on ‘inclinations.’
She sure can write.
thanks QV
YW Red. Hope you and family are doing ok :-)
